Where Prayer was Wont to be Made
Acts 16:13
Wont is an Old English word. It means 'accustomed' or 'the usual'. In both references in the Bible the word is used with regard to Prayer. Luke 22:39 gives us the story of Jesus going to the Mount of Olives "as He was wont." Apparently the time of His crucifixion was not he first time Jesus prayed the Garden for He went there "as He was wont." It was His usual place of prayer.
Custom is different from habit. A habit is an involuntary pattern of behavior acquired by frequent repetition. A habit can be good or bad but it is done involuntary and not always willingly.
In Acts 16:13, the ladies prayer group made the Seaside a place 'where prayer was wont to be made'. Jesus, "as He was wont." made the Garden His place of prayer.
Emmanuel is known for many things, its beautiful heritage structure, its wonderful congregation, its godly leadership. That's all wonderful, but the reason for it all is that bottom-line, Emmanuel is a place 'where prayer was wont to be made'.
We are affiliated with the United Pentecostal Church and may I add that even above that we are a 'United Praying Church'. That's why we have prayer every day at noon... every night... every Saturday evening... Seniors prayer group... Daughters of Zion prayer group... Spanish prayer group and the list goes on...
No wonder Emmanuel is having Revival till He Comes!
